Obama backs away from public health insurance plan
(17 August, 2009))
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/us_health_care_overhaul
WASHINGTON - President Barack Obama is willing to embrace insurance
cooperatives over a government-run plan as the White House faces mounting
opposition to its broad overhaul of the nation's health care system. Bowing to
Republican pressure and offering political cover to fiscally conservative
Democrats, Obama’s administration signaled on Sunday that it is ready to
abandon the idea of giving Americans the option of government-run insurance.
The shift leaves open a chance for compromise with Republicans that probably
would enrage Obama's liberal supporters but could deliver a much-needed victory
on a top domestic priority. Officials from both political parties are looking
for concessions while Congress is on an August recess. Facing tough audiences,
lawmakers and the White House are looking for a way to cover the nation's
almost50 million uninsured while maintaining political standing. Health and
Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said that a government alternative
to private health insurance is "not the essential element" of the
administration's health care overhaul. The White House would be open to co-ops,
she said, a sign that Democrats want a compromise so they can declare
avictory.Under a proposal by Sen. Kent Conrad, D-N.D., consumer-owned nonprofit
cooperatives would sell insurance incompetition with private industry, not
unlike the way electric and agriculture co-ops operate, especially in rural
states such as his own.
The
brutal truth about America's healthcare (15 August 2009)
http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/the-brutal-truth-about-americarsquos-healthcare-1772580.html
An extraordinary report from Guy
Adams in Los Angeles at the music arena that has been turned into a makeshift
medical centre -- They came in their thousands, queuing through the night to
secure one of the coveted wristbands offering entry intoa strange parallel universe
where medical care is a free and basic right and not an expensive luxury. Some
of these Americans had walked miles simply to have their blood pressure
checked, some had slept in their cars in the hope of getting an eye-testor a
mammogram, others had brought their children for immunisations that could end
up saving their life.In the week thatBritain's National Health Service was held
aloft by Republicans as an "evil and Orwellian" example of everything
that iswrong with free healthcare, these extraordinary scenes in Inglewood,
California yesterday provided a sobering reminder of exactly why President
Barack Obama is trying to reform the US system. The LA Forum, the arena that
once hosted sell-out Madonna concerts, has been transformed - for eight days only
- into a vast field hospital. In America, the offer of free healthcare is so
rare, that news of the magical medical kingdom spread rapidly and long lines of
prospective patients snaked around the venue for the chance of getting everyday
treatments that many British people take for granted. In the first two days,
more than 1,500 men, women and children received free treatments worth $503,000
(?304,000). Thirty dentists pulled 471 teeth; 320 people were given standard
issue spectacles; 80 had mammograms; dozens more had acupuncture, orsaw kidney
specialists. By the time the makeshift medical centre leaves town on Tuesday,
staff expect to have dispensed $2m worth of treatments to 10,000 patients. (...)
Although the Americans spend more on medicine than any nation on earth, there are an estimated 50 million with no health insurance at all. Many of those who have jobs can't afford coverage, and even those with standard policies often find it doesn't cover commonplace procedures. California's unemployed adults- who rely on Medicaid - had their dental care axed last month. (...) And ocular care. Children still get both.
President Obama's healthcare plans had been a central plank of his first-term programme, but his reform package has takena battering at the hands of Republican opponents in recent weeks. As the Democrats have failed to coalesce around a single ,straightforward proposal, their rivals have seized on public hesitancy over "socialised medicine" and now the chance offar-reaching reform is in doubt. Most damaging of all has been the tide of vociferous right-wing opponents whipping upscepticism at town hall meetings that were supposed to soothe doubts. In Pennsylvania this week, Senator Arlen Specterwas greeted by a crowd of 1,000 at a venue designed to accommodate only 250, and of the 30 selected speakers at theevent, almost all were hostile. The packed bleachers in the LA Forum tell a different story. The mobile clinic has been organised by the remarkable Remote Area Medical. The charity usually focuses on the rural poor, although they worked inNew Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. Now they are moving into more urban venues, this week's event in Los Angeles is believed to be the largest free healthcare operation in the country. Doctors, dentists and therapists volunteer their time, and resources to the organization. To many US medical professionals, it offers a rare opportunity to plug into the public service ethos on which their trade was supposedly founded. "People come here who haven't seen a doctor for years. And we're able to say 'Hey, you have this, you have this, you have this'," said Dr Vincent Anthony, a kidney specialist volunteering five days of his team's time. "It's hard work, but incredibly rewarding. Healthcare needs reform, obviously. There are so many people falling through the cracks, who don't get care. That's why so many are here." CLIP
Who's
behind the attacks on a health care overhaul? (August 14, 2009)
http://www.mcclatchydc.com/227/story/73765.html
WASHINGTON - Much of the money and strategy behind the so-called grassroots
groups organizing opposition to the
Democrats' health care plans comes from conservative
political consultants, professional organizers and millionaires,
some of whom hold financial stakes in the outcome .If President Barack
Obama and Congress extend health insurance coverage to millions of
uninsured Americans, raise taxes on the wealthy to pay for it, and limit
insurers' discretion on who they cover and what they charge, that could pinch
these opponents.
My pal Jussta says about MED-I-CARE HEALTH CARE:
You can pay thousands in premiums if you want to - but I think people should
use MED-I-CARE. I have had that government run health program since 1997
- it is called MEDICARE or
MEDICAID or MEDICAL. I have always had the best doctors, specialists and
surgeons. (open heart surgery.) I never fear that I cannot
pay the premium or the co-pay. I have refused to sign up with an HMO - I
have independent choice. I need NO referrals to specialists.
I am never charged for any tests of any kind. I never have a problem
locating doctors who accept MEDICARE So please, ignore
the BS and seek the truth yourself! Ask the old coger who has it!"
Obama says
insurance companies holding U.S. hostage (August 14, 2009)
http://www.reuters.com/article/domesticNews/idUSTRE57D47P20090814
BELGRADE, Montana (Reuters) - U.S. President Barack Obama, pushing for
healthcare reform during a trip to the West, said on Friday the country was
"held hostage" by insurance companies that deny coverage to sick
people. Obama, on a multi-state swing to tamp down vociferous opposition to his
top domestic priority, targeted insurance companies for dropping customers who
become sick or forcing patients to cover huge costs. "We are held hostage
at any given moment by health insurance companies that deny coverage or drop
coverage or charge fees that people can't afford," Obama told a crowd of
some 1,000 people in Montana.” It’s wrong. It's bankrupting families. It's
bankrupting businesses. And we are going to fix it when we pass health
insurance reform this year," he said. In a half-work, half-play trip with
his family that will include stops at the Grand Canyon and other national
parks, Obama, a Democrat, aims to emphasize the benefits of his nearly $1
trillion plan to overhaul the insurance industry, expand healthcare coverage
and cut costs to consumers. CLIP Thanks to Jean Hudon whose The Shift of Ages

HEALTH CARE WANTED: DEAD OR
ALIVE by Dennis Kucinch.
The masquerade is over! The "public option" is ... dead. Health care
reform is now a private option: WHICH FOR PROFIT INSURANCE COMPANY DO YOU WANT?
You have to choose. And you have to pay. If you have a low income, under HR3200
government will subsidize the private insurance companies and you will still
have to pay premiums, co-pays and deductibles. The Administration plan requires
that everyone must have health insurance, so it is delivering tens of millions
of new” customers" to the insurance companies. Health care? Not at ALL.
Insurance is hype, a bait and switcheroo, a bamboozle.. Cost controls? No
chance. You will next hear talk about "health
co-ops." The truth is that insurance company campaign
contributions have co-opted the public interest.
Spread the word about the WAR sucking up the trillions Obama needs for that 240 billion buck health reform bill. Rally the nation around true health care reform, which covers everyone and maintains fiscal integrity without breaking our nation's bank! Your contribution will empower our efforts to continue to fight for the single-payer, not-for-profit health care bill, HR676 "Medicare for All," which Rep. John Conyers did. The bill now has 85 sponsors in the House.
The hotly debated HR3200, the so-called "health care reform" bill, is nothing less than corporate welfare in the guise of social welfare and reform. It is a convoluted mess. The real debate which we should be having is not occurring. Removing the "public option" from a public bill paid for by public money is not in the public interest. What is left is a "private option" paid for with public money. Why should public money be spent on a private option which does not guarantee 100% coverage nor have any cost controls? A true public option would provide 30% savings immediately which would then cover the 1/3rd of the population who presently have no health care.
Unfortunately, under HR3200, the Government is choosing winners and losers in the private sector; proposing to spend public funds on subsidizing insurance companies who make money not providing health care. This process will insure only the expansion of profits. Gone is the debate over cost.
As a result of current negotiations, the Medicare Part D rip-off will continue for another decade, further fleecing senior citizens. Drug importation has been dropped, so no inexpensive drugs can be accessed from other nations. Instead we are told the pharmaceutical companies will accept a 2% cut in the growth rate of their profits - they call this cost control!
If the matter were not so serious, it would be farcical: The executive branch pretends that the proposed health care reforms are something they are not. The legislation is being attacked for something it is not. Congressional leadership and the White House defend the legislation, pretending it actually is the very proposal that is being attacked. But it is not. A commonsense government health care reform policy would insure that every single American has full access to health care by expanding Medicare to cover everyone under a Single Payer System. We are already paying for a universal standard of care, it is just we are not getting it.
Spread the word and rally the
nation around true health care reform which covers everyone and maintains
fiscal integrity without subsidizing insurance and pharmaceutical companies and
breaking our nation's bank! TALK OUT against the war. THE WAR which sucks up
trillions a year, to genocide Muslims. That's your money going to kill people
who are poor, innocent, living in the dark ages. Kind people, superb parents.
MURDERING them and their children.
Our voice in Congress will continue to challenge the special interests who do
not want "single-payer" to succeed. Join in combating the special and
corporate interests who spend millions to try to influence Congressional
members.
MANY Republicans and many
CONSERVATIVES feel that the WAR on MUSLIMS IS WORTHWHILE! And MEDICAL SERVICES
FOR OUR PEOPLE ARE NOT so they basically are into killing EVERYBODY!
A VEGAN, HOLISTIC, NEW AGE New Mexico cactus-hugging CENTRIST just send me an EMAIL proving that even the progressives are against healthcare for the poor and even SPIRITUAL NEW MEXICO PEOPLE cherish the war. They are very smart and have blame to go around, read this: "ALL insurance is a scam. That is not the point. Government is not to be trusted. Period. Look where we are...look where California is (in the crapper) with all its' socialistic ideas. It's altruistic and should be fab but it doesn't work. Now we should do that to the rest of the country?
Illegals here, in NMexico, have driver’s licenses. All it takes is a driver’s license to vote. Citizenship means nothing anymore. THAT'S the point. The government cannot bail us out. There is no more money. The people have to do this. We can cut costs without killing healthcare for the 80% that do have it. I am an Independent so please don’t think I am defending the Republicans because I am not. I believe we need to help each other but NOT by government involvement.. We got into this mess by socialistic ideas. Jimmy Carter pushed for and signed into law the Community Reinvestment Act which forced banks to lower their standards so that previously unqualified people could get a mortgage. He thought we needed to help poor people with a government program and look what happened! Clinton doubled down on the same Act lowering standards even more so even worse unqualified borrowers would get loans. Now they have defaulted and into foreclosures! Frank Raines was put in charge of Fannie Mae (via Clinton) and bought up the bad loans. Raines then falsified Fannie's financial reports, collecting bonuses of 90 million dollars over 5 years! Chris Dodd, head of the Senatorial Financial Committee, suppressed efforts by G.W. (can't stand him either) and congressionals to rein in the corruption at Fannie and Freddie Mac. And he took large campaign contributions from F&F Mac. Barney Frank, head of the House Banking Committee, also suppressed the same efforts to investigate corruption.....because he is part of it and should by lynched!!! Obama (who was my Senator when I lived in IL...ooh...the things i could tell you about him and his trash wife) while he was an attorney representing ACORN filed lawsuits against banks in order to force banks to give loans to ppl who could not afford to pay the loans back. THIS IS NOT THE WAY TO HELP POOR PEOPLE...now in foreclosures, they are headed for tent cities. He also helped to suppress the investigation of F&F Mac. THEY CAUSED THIS CHAOS!!! Remember, the Dems had control of the House and Senate for 2 years prior to Obama taking the White House. Blame insurance companies if you must but they aren't even half the problem that is eating this country. The Dems are selling a bill of goods not worthy to wipe my shoes on. People need to come together to get states to do this...get co-ops going....but NOT THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT. Medicare and Medicaid are broke. There is no money. How much do you value your freedom? Get off the war. There is so much going on behind the lines, we don't know half the story. We are leaving Iraq (never should have gone in the first place) but, anymore, it's irrelevant. We can fight terrorism there or we can fight it here. They are not stopping. Which would you prefer? Sweden has fabulous medical coverage. All paid for by the government. Their taxes? 50% of their gross income. Is that what you want? If you think 27% plus the deductible is bad (i agree, it isn't good and insurance companies can do better if pushed by opening state lines to more competition) then try giving 50% of your gross to the government to do as they please (since you trust them to do the right thing) and enjoy your lost freedoms and terrific healthcare.....really think it will turn out as good as Sweden? I truly doubt it. " Signed, Lily in N.M (this lady makes an astounding case for everything but the continuing genocidal Nazi war on MUSLIMS families living in huts or caves!) That last is pretty damn indefensible.
