A beautiful woman who's seriously into 'COUNTRY LIFE' wrote me, "Anita, I haven't moved to the country yet...but I am finally off work, trying to get a claim put through for disability due to MS caused by Lyme Disease. Once that is done, I will be looking at locations to buy land. There is a disabled homebuyer program in some counties in my area, as well as the USDA rural homebuyer program, these both give good discounts, etc. The farm labor I will never be able to do, due to a.) a lack of rural skills but especially due to fragile health, limited energy. So, I plan to hire outside help, pay out of my SSI or perhaps do something in trade. I can create websites and surprisingly, even folks out i the sticks seem to want to have a website, maybe sell Barn Hexes or Baskets or Jams. They seem to have an instinct for GUERILLA CAPITALISM. That's a good thing! I also feel that I can freecycle most of the materials that I need to fix up an old farm house, maybe get a trailer or double wide from all the SENIOR COMMUNITIES that the owner is turning into CONDOS. They tear down all the double wides and haul them out as TRASH. There's a big park in PACIFIC PALISADES CALIF about to be torn down. Get in on this! You need just a house moving service as these structures are almost as big as a small cottage. Then there are RVs, converted school buses, houseboats smaller than 30 ft that one can live in. Useful for tax purposes, savings. There are cottages on floats far enough out from shore and small enough that they do not pay taxes, yurts, straw bale, adobe, rammed earth, submerged in hillside, under a mound Mandan-style (great in tornado country), etc. etc. So I thought I'd share some Books on the subject:

You can grow more vegetables fruits nuts berries and grains than you thought possible on less land than you can imagine. After you buy your acre, build a "DO IT YOURSELF HOME" then, you need a well, a good, reliable water source. You learn to make home made compost out of dried leaves, neighbors' green trash barrel, sunlight. Then you make sure you bought good, bottom land, nothing rocky unless you want to collect rocks for raised beds. Get some free seeds or cuttings found with neighbors and online. SEE HOW AT:

DISTAFF VIEW is from DAVE a FARMER IN CANADA:

Dear Anita: I was once told that inside every city dweller there dwelt an inner
ruralite secretly dreaming of getting out to the country. And that
seems to be true. I was one, who actually did buy 200 acres with an
ancient house, good barn, two drilled wells and lots of serviceable
fences. I bought me some chickens, a couple of dairy goats, planted a
garden and started the great dream. After all that I had little
capital left but did get a large 4-wheel drive truck that doubled as a
tractor, a large rototiller, a chainsaw and a few other items and was
able to heat entirely with wood, eat from garden, barnyard and
woodlands and only had to worry about the seasons, and paying the high
telephone and vehicle costs—transportation and communication were the
biggest expenses. Then ensued the long story, a great one in itself,
with many chapters, and at the end of which, a dozen years later, I
moved back to the big city (of Ottawa), mainly to "get away from the
rat race". Yes, rural living is a lot of work, from before dawn till
way after dark, eight days a week, and cities have their attractions,
mainly specialized labours that pay all one's expenses in only thirty
(to sixty) hours per week, weekends, plus your friends, family and
keen interests are all very accessible. So, don't lose sight of the
dream, but go into it with eyes open. "

Dave, you bought 200 acres. We only need one acre for self sufficiency.

The new farmer's bibliography should include such classics as Helen and Scott Nearing's Living the Good Life, and Maurice G. Kains' Five Acres And Independence, for those long winter evenings sitting by the fire with the seed catalogues. True but look what I found online: "This book FIVE ACRES was one of my father's favorites, even though he never took up farming. For those considering a rural lifestyle, perhapse even self-suffiency, this has to be the starting point. However, it is the pre-war, 1940 edition. I literally cringed when I read about lining the cistern with sheet lead, or using mercuric chloride to sterilize wounds on fruit trees (it's a wonder our ancestors lived long enough to have children). I'm sure this book has a lot of good advice, but if this city boy ever moves to the farm my father never had I'll try to check all facts with a second or third source. Is there anyone who's qualified to write the 21st Century edition?" Answer: YES, YOU dear reader, after you buy your one acre tidy millenium farm and write your book. Big trend toward publishing this kind of first hand reportage. As for the other title, I found that title by the Nearings for a buck at a garage sale! I plan to hit ABE BOOKS to find the other titles using my secret method. Click on ABE BOOKS to see what that is.
