The thing about reading books is, it's like taking a drink from the River Platte. A mile wide and an inch deep. Once you absorb a mile wide of these books, they just create this shallow band of liquid irrigation in the mind, which soaks it up, only it's never enough at the same time the lubrication is always almost disappearing. In fact a guru once said, 'How can so and so be a smart guy? He spends way too much time in the library reading!" However, get hold of the books that are said to be ACME truth givers, scan the info, digest it. The teachings may regurgitate in you occasionally when the mind is turned off and give you grist for your OWN mills, the interior ones….to work on. And it is a leavening bread, a self-leavening kind of specific information toward which we are pointing our minds and those of our children!
As you get taught the basic anatomy of HOW IT IS down here, and
learn the rules, you'll synthesize what you absorbed and come up with COGNITIONS
that are entirely your own based on facts you long ago digested. And of course,
share/ PRESENT solutions for everyday problems better.
I'd say that getting off the mind and even getting off caffeine is req'd, as the soul is everywhere the mind isn't. But later, when you are a Master and a Saint, use the mind or mind stimulants with discretion just for mental work. It aids the rational brain in computing faster, so when one TALKS to groups, or writes, maybe it's useful. Except that I find MINDS do not digest things a well as the soul. People LISTENING to a talk sometimes experience epiphanies which they never experience with books. The obvious deduction is…the more you make your writing sound like the human voice, the better it's going to go down.
My favorite mystic is Dr. Richard Alpert of Harvard fame, whose spiritual name was Baba Ram Dass. His books are found at metaphysical bookstores. I'll give you a taste, as I have a few files. If you want them, let me know. I started transcribing one into an htm file to send to my son. The “HERE AND NOW” book.
Dr. Alan Watts is interesting to read. He's a Dr of Theosophy, comparative religions, Englishman, good friend of Aldous Huxley. ISLAND by HUXLEY was the book that spawned the psychdelic sixties. One can listen to Alan Watts when he's on KPFK-FM.org an amazing radio station. Watts has an Archive that has all his tapes available. I can get you their address if you want it. But any library can get Alan Watts titles for you. Again, FREE is a plus!
